HADASSAH D. KINZER, ASID Died at the age of 89 on January 13 after having a stroke. She was an active and long term member of the NY metro Chapter until her retirement only a few years ago. Her integrity, intelligence, and unerring design style was also reflected in her personal style. She will be remembered for her hats and thin cigars that she smoked in a holder that made you notice and remember her. She was a Medalist, an officer and a leader of many cultural and fundraising programs for the Chapter. She received recognition for her work in organizing a silent auction in conjunction with the United Nations as well as other out reach projects. »  In Loving Memory of Robert Herring
Long time friend of the design industry and 28-year executive of F. Schumacher & Co., Robert Herring, age 78, died on May 4, 2006 at his home in New York City. Mr. Herring began his career at F. Schumacher & Co., as advertising manager in 1968. By 1979 he was appointed Vice President of the Shumacher division and continued to enjoy a full career with the company until his retirement in 1996. Canadian-born Robert Herring, a baritone, attended the Royal Conservatory of Music and won various talent searches. In 1946 he skated with the Ice Capades, which he called“my method for coming to the United States.” Making his way to New York City, he continued studying and performing music. “But because of my Scottish background, I wanted to earn a steady income,” Herring said. So, in 1948 Mr. Herring began his association with the home furnishings industry working in public relations positions with notable textile firms of the day. His budding career as a voice for designers took a detour in 1950. Conscripted for the Korean War, Herring taught music to officers and recruits at the Adjutant General’s School at Fort Benjamin Harrison outside of Indianapolis, Indiana. Robert Herring was the only man recognized as a “Friend of the Decorators Club,” an elite women’s group which began in 1914 in New York City. In addition, he was the first male president of the International Furnishings and Design Association. As national president of the educational foundation of IFDA, Herring supported the preservation of the industry’s history. Interior Design Magazine honored Robert with the 1994 Roscoe award for his distinguished service. He was the 1997 recipient of the ASID Metro Chapter, Elsie De Wolfe Award. Robert performed in charitable concert recitals at Lincoln Center's Merkin Hall in New York City benefiting Merchant’s House of Lower Mahattan and other design related organizations. Robert continued to foster the interior design community in mentoring young designers in the field. After his retirement from F. Schumacher & Co., he had been a professor at the New York School of Interior Design for the past ten years, and in 2005 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from the school. In December of 2003 Robert Herring was made an honorary citizen of his favorite city in Sicily, Militello where he often visited. Mr. Herring is survived by a son Robert Herring Jr. and three grandchildren, Michael Herring, Andrew Herring, Lydia Young and a great grandson, Gabriel Young. Gifts and memorials should go to The New York School of Interior Design, Robert Herring Fund, 170 East 70th Street, NYC, NY 10021. A memorial service will be held at the NYSID on September 6th at five o’clock.
